According to the C40 Cities, Buenos Aires leads the region along with Bogotá and São Paulo.
C40 today recognized the three most active cities in the fight against climate change in each region of the world . Buenos Aires, Bogotá and São Paulo were lauded as the three most committed in Latin America.
"This is an important recognition internationally of all the measures we promote in Buenos Aires and of the role of the mayor in promoting this agenda throughout the country and the region," said Fernando Straface, Secretary General and Secretary for International Relations of the City of Buenos Aires.
Across the globe, the cities of Los Angeles, San Francisco, Boston, London, Copenhagen, Milan, Seoul, Tokyo, Melbourne, Durban, Accra, Johannesburg, Dubai, Dhaka, Delhi, Hong Kong, Shenzhen and Nanjing were also recognized by C40.
According to C40, these cities took exceptional steps in 2020 to share best practices across other cities, provided extraordinary thought leadership, and represented the C40 network globally. “With many cities around the world still confronting the devastating effects of the pandemic, the most immediate test of any leader's commitment to climate action now is to ensure a fair and sustainable recovery, based on the principles of the Global Green New Deal,” said the organization.
Buenos Aires was one of the first cities in the world to commit to carbon neutrality by the year 2050. All the goals and measures to combat climate change can be followed at buenosaires.gob.ar/cambioclimatico, an open date site for local citizens that uses simple graphics to showcase climate indicators and involve citizens in local climate-related activities.
Since 2020, Buenos Aires' Mayor, Horacio Rodríguez Larreta has been vice president of C40 for Latin America, together with the mayor of Bogotá, Claudia Hernández. Both leaders have committed to promoting the development of climate action plans in Latin American cities.
The standards for participating in C40 include a series of mandatory requirements, such as setting an ambitious goal to reduce GHG emissions; a climate action plan with concrete initiatives to achieve climate goals; an increase in urban climate resilience and active sharing of best practice examples with other cities through C40 networks.
